Feeling confused as to why Corona virus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu?

This is from an immunologist at Johns Hopkins University:

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will).

Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS/ URIENWEGINFEKSIES

WAT IS 'N URIENWEGINFEKSIE?/WHAT IS AN URINARY TRACT INFECTION?

Vroue se ureter is baie korter as mans s'n.

SYMPTOMS OF AN URINARY TRACT INFECTION/SIMPTOME VAN 'N URIENWEGINFEKSIE

Did you know that not everyone with an urinary tract infections has symtoms?

Here is the most common symptoms when having an UTI (urinary tract infection):

  • An urge to urinate frequently.
  • A burning and painful feeling in the bladder or urethra during urination.
  • Pain, even when not urinating.
  • Women often experience an uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone.
  • Passing small amounts of urine when having a huge urge to urinate.
  • Milky or cloudy urine.
  • When you start getting fever, it is an indication that the infection has spread to the kidneys.
  • Kidney infection presents back pain, nausea causing vomiting and pain below the ribs.

To diagnose a UTI, the doctor needs to take a midstream urine sample. The testing can be done in the doctor's room or otherwise send to the lab for testing.

BEHANDELING EN VOORKOMING VAN URIENWEGINFEKSIE/ TREATMENT AND PREVENSION FOR AN URINARY TRACT INFECTION

  • Drink elke dag genoeg water (ten minste 8 glase)

NOT VACCINATING YOUR KIDS LEAVES THEM VULNERABLE TO DISEASE THEIR WHOLE LIFE!

When your daughter gets Rubella when pregnant, how are you going to explain that you chose to leave her at risk?

What will you say when she calls you and tells you she has Cervical cancer, because you decided that she wouldn't need the HPV vaccine?

What do you tell your son when he breaks the news to you that he cannot have kids, thanks to the Mumps that he got as a teenager?

And what do you say when he gives Influenza to his grandma? How do you explain that she won't be coming home from hospital? Not ever.

Do you tell them that you didn't think these diseases were that serious? That you thought that your organic, home cooked food was enough to protect them?

DO YOU SAY SORRY?

Joint media statement issued by the South African Police Service and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA)

Joint media statement issued by the South African Police Service and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA)

Warning: SAPS warns that dealing in cannabis is still illegal

Pretoria: 4 November 2019 - The South African Police Service is issuing a stern warning that the establishment of illegal dispensaries/outlets, online sites and social media platforms which are marketing and selling cannabis and cannabis-related products to the public remains illegal, except where specifically allowed in terms of the Medicines and Related Substances Act.

Some of these illegal businesses, purporting to be operating legally in terms of the Traditional Health Practitioners Act (No. 22 of 2007), are also being sold to members of the public as franchises authorised to deal in cannabis and cannabis-related products. In terms of the Traditional Health Practitioners Act, the definition of “traditional medicine” means an object or substance used in traditional health practice for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of a physical or mental illness or any curative or therapeutic purpose, including the maintenance or restoration of physical or mental health or well-being in human beings but does not include a dependence-producing or dangerous substance or drug”. As a result, the Traditional Health Practitioners Act does not create a mechanism to sell cannabis and cannabis-related products that are not exempted in terms of the Medicines Act.

The public is once again reminded of the effect of the Constitutional Court judgment in Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and Others v Prince: National Director of Public Prosecutions and Others v Rubin: National Director of Public Prosecutions and Others v Acton and Others [2018] SACC 30, handed down on 18 September 2018. The effect of the judgment is that only an adult person (18 years and older) may use, possess or cultivate cannabis in private for his or her personal consumption in private. The use, including smoking, of cannabis in public or in the presence of children or in the presence of non-consenting adult persons is not allowed. The use or possession of cannabis in private other than by an adult for his or her personal consumption is also not permitted.

Dealing in cannabis remains a serious criminal offence in terms of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act (No 140 of 199)2. The definition of dealing is made very clear in the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, which currently reads (with the words “read in” by the Constitutional Court): “in relation to a drug, includes performing any act in connection with the transhipment, importation, cultivation other than the cultivation of cannabis by an adult in a private place for his or her personal consumption in private, collection, manufacture, supply, prescription, administration, sale, transmission or exportation of the drug”.

Cannabis (the whole plant or parts or products thereof) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (the psychoactive substance that gives one a “high”) are currently listed as Schedule 7 substances in terms of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, 1965 (Act 101 of 1965) (the Medicines Act), except when present in processed hemp fibre and products containing not more than 0,1 % of THC in a form not suitable for ingestion, smoking or inhaling purposes; or when present in processed products made from cannabis seed containing not more than 0,001 % of THC; or when used for medicinal purposes.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is listed as a Schedule 4 substance. Certain CBD-containing preparations have been excluded from the operation of the Schedules by the Minister of Health for a time-limited period, as per an exclusion notice (R.756) published in Government Gazette No. 42477 on 23 May 2019.

CBD-containing preparations for medicinal use are excluded when they contain a maximum daily dose of 20 mg of CBD with an accepted low-risk claim or health claims, without referring to any specific disease.

CBD-containing processed products are also excluded when the naturally occurring quantity of CBD and THC contained in the product does not exceed 0,0075 % and

0,001 %, of CBD and THC respectively.

Any CBD-containing products that are outside the parameters of the exclusion notice are subject to the provisions of the Schedules and registration as a medicine.

Any person who imports or manufactures a CBD-containing medicine in accordance with the exclusion notice must still be in possession of a licence issued in terms of section 22C(1)(b) of the Medicines Act and comply with any relevant standards, including current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards. Such persons must be able to present verified assessment by an accredited laboratory of the CBD and/or THC content of any product or medicine when requested.

The South African Police Service is mandated to and will act, not only against businesses that sell cannabis illegally, but also against the customers who buy these products.

Members of the public are encouraged to download the MySAPSApp on any iPhone or android to have easy access to the police to, among others, provide tip-offs or one may report any information relating to the sale of cannabis to the SAPS through the SAPS Crime Stop number 086 00 10111. Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Sooibrand en proton-pomp-inhibeerders / Heartburn and proton pump inhibitors

Gelukkig is daar ‘n oplossing! / Have you ever had a burning feeling anywhere from your stomach to your throat? Heartburn is caused by increased acid production and can irritate your oesophagus. Luckily there is a solution!

Wat is proton-pomp-inhibeerders (PPIs)? / What are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)?

PPsI are a group of medicine that work on the cells that line the stomach.  By blocking the acid producing cells that line the stomach, PPIs reduce acid production.  An increased acid production can cause ulcers.

What conditions are PPIs used to treat?

PPIs kan gebruik word om die volgende siekte toestande te voorkom of te behandel / PPIs are used to prevent or treat the following diseases:

  • Behandeling van ulkusse in die esofagus, maag en duodenum (gedeelte van jou dunderm);
  • To reduce acid reflux - this may cause heartburn, inflammation and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD);
  • Dit word in kombinasie met antibiotikum gerbuik om Helicobacter pylori (bakterieë gevind in die maagwand) te behandel;
  • To help prevent and treat ulcers associated with anti-inflammatory medicines, NSAID’s (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Alternative methods

Baking soda can also be used to treat heartburn, but this will only provide temporary relieve.  Baking soda neutralizes stomach acid, but triggers the enzymes in your stomach to produce acid all over again due to the sudden decrease in acidity.  The symptoms of acid reflux may return even worse than before.  Be cautious when using baking soda as an alternative treatment.

  • Maaltye wat hoog is in vet, twee tot drie ure voor U gaan slaap;
  • Alkohol en gaskoeldrank;
  • Sjokolade;
  • Sitrus;

For more information on how to treat heartburn or any other related conditions feel free to contact the pharmacy or just pop in for a quick visit!
